Excellent analogy. Al. I typically love Lufthansa, so surprised to see this in the first place. As a lifelong Vikings fan, I prefer a "Skol" to a "Cheese" anytime. Cheers!

Thanks, James. Just read this: "The Vikings are 58-66-3 (including 1-1 in the postseason) all-time against the Packers." You must lash out against these cheaters! :)

Vikes have been breaking my heart since I was a wee laddie. Perhaps we can get ahead this time?!

As a life-long Greenbay Packer fan, I have to say this hit home. Also as someone who was a Packer fan in "The Glory Days," of the Bart Starr/Vince Lombardi World Champions (before 'Super Bowls' existed, and when the NFL and the AFL weren't the same), before the ridiculous slur of Wisconsinites as "Cheese Heads" became a marketing bonanza, but while the Packers have ALWAYS been the arch rivals of Da Bears, I LOVE your use of the analogous experience. With the added history of centuries of discrimination, based on appearance, or habits, or rituals, or beliefs. Lufthansa, of all except maybe Emirates, airline employees and management SHOULD have been trained and known better. Had this happened on, say, United or American or Delta Airlines, it would have been as wrong, but easier to accept as the result of prejudices not steeped in such relatively recent history as the Holocaust. But the outcome, if not the resultant trauma, would be the same. So classic a case of discrimination by religious uniform has rarely been as obvious.

Thanks, Terin. I used to cheer for the Packers to piss off my dad who was a Bears fan. I once even bought a cheesehead hat at a charity auction. Don't tell anyone.

I agree this was a bad call, and fine-worthy, but have you ever been on one of the planes packed with religious observant hard core men? They refuse to sit next to females, forcing attendants to do complicated seat shifting arrangements, then they congregate in the aisles or by the bathrooms and do their conclaves and prayers, often ignoring pleas that they sit down and strap back in.

Thanks, Nina. If someone is breaking the rules, they should be sanctioned. The Transportation Department found that not all of these folks did this. Too bad the airline didn't identify and single out the ones who did, but instead nailed everyone. I can't count all the disagreeable people I've had to endure on a plane. In the 2000s, I wrote about a fat guy who could't fit in the middle seat and pressed me against the window with his girth on a gruleling trans-Pacific flight. I opined that passengers should be charged by the pound, or have to pay for an extra seat, among other suggestions. Man, did I get hate mail for that. I was labeled, a "sizeist." Admittedly, maybe I am. At least on a plane.
